Massive Mothers of Plaza de Mayo round after the far-right candidate Milei triumphed in Argentinian run-off voting

Diverse human rights organisms, social organisations, left parties and non-gruped people accompanied the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo (Madres de Plaza de Mayo) round this Thursday 23th, that was held at 15.30 at the square at the front of the Government House in Buenos Aires, as the Mothers do since 30th April 1977: they couldn´t stand in a public space so they started to walk around the obelisk, demanding information on the whereabouts of their daughters and sons.

From the Memory Truth and Justice Encounter (Encuentro Memoria Verdad y Justicia) called for participation in a declaration, stating: “In view of the electoral result in our country of the Milei-Villaruel formula, a political sector that openly denies the genocide, the 30.000 disappeared and which vindicates the civil-military-ecclesiastical dictatorship, the MTJE in a plenary meeting declares itself in a state of alert and mobilisation, against impunity and in defence of yesterday´s and today´s human rights”.

Besides both elected representatives have denied in public several times the number of disappeared during the last dictatorship, Victoria Villaruel, who will be vice-president from 10th December, had bonds with the deceased genocidal Jorge Rafael Videla, member of the Military Junta and one of the heads of the dictatorship. She was also found in documents that link her with the genocidal Miguel Etchecolatz, who was director of Investigations of the Buenos Aires police force and responsible of several crimes against humanity.

The Mothers of Plaza de Mayo – Founding Line have maintained their political independence from the different governments and from the state in Argentina. They demanded the opening of the archives of the last dictatorship and affirmed that it will be necessary to defend all the rights that are endangered by the new government.

Nora Cortiñas, iconic 93-year-old member and human rights activist (at left above), said to the press: “We are not going to give up, we are going to always rise high the struggle flags of our 30.000 dissapeared. We continue to demand justice, truth and memory, as we have done until now”.

Javier Milei was winner in a run-off voting held last Sunday 19th, against the ruling party’s candidate Sergio Massa, who is the current finance minister in the midst of a profound economic crisis.
