Diary of Mysore: first week

My first week practicing with Sharatji is over, and it´s been almost two weeks since I arrived in Mysore, India. It was a good idea to arrive a few days before starting. Now I am used to being here, the energy of this place has become familiar and I´ve already learnt how to drive a scooter and how to do it safely, here were it seems there are no rules in the streets.

Words are superfluous for those of us who love this practice. There is an indescribable beauty during Mysore classes, and a strong energy during the lead ones. Practising surrounded by practitioners who take their practice seriously, under Sharath´s sight, is a gift. It is a pleasure to be here, in the place of the world where Ashtanga is as important as it is for you in your loneliness.

It´s been a long time since I wanted to come to Mysuru and also been a considerable amount of years since the first time someone taught me Ashtanga postures. My practice has grown slowly in the extern aspect (many people in the half time do the same amount of asanas than me) but I´ve learnt not to expect things about it. Yoga is not about doing more postures: it is about streghtening your personal sadhana. During the first week, and they told me the second too, you only practise primary.

Not everyone had life-or-dead experiences in their life (I neither wish nor demand it for anyone) but in my case, that I did have, it completely influenced how I relate to the practice and life in general: a strong hit to my ego that taught me to not react to situations, just take everything as it is. The only fact of being able to stand on the mat daily -and much more, doing it here, at Sharath Yoga Centre– makes me feel completely privileged. It is necessary a big effort to be able to stand on the mat every day, and this is part of yoga, as well.

Practicing for a long time, with commitment and faith, with no expectations about the outcomes. To be humble is the key.
